Policy Brief Launch at ISPP, 28th August, 2024. 05:45 PM – 6:45 PM

Indian School of Public Policy (ISPP) released its first policy brief, “The Economic Significance of Urban Areas”, produced in collaboration with Dun & Bradstreet International. The report focuses on cities as engines of economic growth by looking past urban challenges to possible pathways and beyond urban planning to urban management.

A discussion session with one of the authors, Dr Arun Singh – Global Chief Economist, Dun & Bradstreet International and Urban Fellow, ISPP – was moderated by Professor O.P Agarwal, Professor of Practice, ISPP.
Key takeaways from the discussion

  • Highly productive and efficient cities, with 36% of the population contributing 60% of GDP, are key to Viksit Bharat’s goal of a $30 trillion economy.
  • Innovation and urban infrastructure are essential to accommodate this growth and address shocks like pandemics and climate change.
  • For truly sustainable urban growth, capacity-building in city management, effective policy implementation, and proactive municipal corporations, is imperative.
  • To harness cities’ economic potential, there is a need for urban leadership that can visualise future cities and plan and execute management strategies.
